Statement
Jamieson’s artistic practice has evolved to focus on the constant search of making art that uses awkwardness, humour, sexuality, pop culture and unintentional performance in a critical and often self-reflective way. His choice in medium is dictated mainly by the idea; and ranges from mixed media, drawings, sculpture and video.
Jamieson’s drawing and mixed media work is inspired by current culture’s obsession with the celebrity, the body, fetishized objects, the aesthetics of trash culture, vintage magazines, comic books, new age spiritual healing, self-help and stupidity—both good and bad. He finds a deep satisfaction in harmonizing drawing, paint, collage, and small objects on one 2D surface. His sculptures also have a collage-like quality that incorporates objects with a deep ingrained personal or cultural importance or history. Jamieson highlights the very human instinct to graft significance onto objects—nostalgia. Recent artwork is possibly Jamieson’s most personal, focusing on objects, materials and themes that he found meaning in, or reflected on over the last few years. The ultimate goal is to craft new meaning by playing with the balance of including or removing pieces and parts.
Another part of Jamieson’s art practice includes unintentional performance—an inspiration for Jamieson’s own output. His video practice is inspired by the amateur use of digital content. His videos are based on improvised performance in order to reveal a more authentic, stupid moment. This is illustrated by the creation of self-centered characters as tools for different forms of performative exploration.
